This new service should be regarded as "Narrowcasting"
as it is designed to address the need of reaching
small targeted audiences economically.
IN MANY CASES LPDS PROVIDES A VIABLE
ALTERNATIVE TO THE USE OF FM-SCA CHANNELS
BECAUSE FCC RULES PERMIT ADDITIONAL
FILL-IN CO-CHANNEL TRANSMITTERS TO PROVIDE
BETTER COVERAGE. RECEIVERS COST LESS, TOO.
As developed by LPDS, signals could either "be in the clear",
digitized or otherwise encrypted, and could even be addressable
to reach only certain receivers, for example, paid subscribers.
When fully deployed, utilizing spectrum already owned by LPDS,
this service would provide twenty-eight separate program feeds
reaching over 14 MILLION potential listeners within twenty miles
of the Empire State Building
See the official FCC coverage map below.
Programming can be transmitted in Stereo or Mono.
The LPDS team has worked diligently to overcome hurdles of
every type, from copyright and performance issues, to music
licensing, interference and other technical problems
so as to bring LPDS to fruition.
Suggested uses include (but not limited to):
-
Live sports broadcasts
-
Translators for out-of-region broadcasters
-
"Fill-in" transmitters for AM stations (in-building penetration)
-
Special Events broadcasts
-
Foreign-language programming
-
Religious services and instruction
-
Business news
-
Broadcasts of town meetings
-
Emergency broadcasts
-
Book readings for the Blind
-
Programming for the Handicapped
-
Language instruction (ESL and other)
-
Wireless simulcasts for Internet Radio
-
Encrypted gambling information
Pocket receivers of various types are already available "off-the-shelf"
to receive LPDS "in-the-clear" broadcasts. Any "police scanner" will
also receive our test broadcasts without modification.
Please contact our Technical Department to receive exact
frequency programming instructions.
